Many college students have moved away from home, but whether they are states or just a few blocks away, there is one time when you can reunite with your family, the holidays. Even though I don't live far away from my family, I don't get to see many of them very often, unless it is a holiday. So when Easter came around and the entire family was getting together to celebrate, I had the chance to sit back and observe my own family. Many of my cousins are in their own little world and have their own lives, so the only time we really sit down and talk is when a holiday pushes us together. I know that not everyone has a family situation like this. As I sat in the backyard of my older cousin's home, I listened to what everyone else was talking about and was expecting people to split up into small groups to talk like they usually do.
I learned that one of my cousins is planning on getting married, news that I had not learned earlier. I also found out that another one of my cousins is trying to have a baby, another topic I learned for the first time. It's so surprising if you just listen to what's being said around you, what you can hear and what you find out.
When you start to have your own lives and are doing your own things, it's hard to stay connected with everyone.
Another thing that I observed about my family was that they are very nosy. Whether it was about someone else's love life or who broke up with their significant other, they were sneaking around to ask anyone that would tell them.
So, the next time you're sitting around some of your family members, especially the ones that you don't get to see as much, just remember to listen to them. Pay attention to what they are doing and observe them, you will learn a lot. Observing people in general is an extremely interesting thing to do, but when you begin to observe your own family it becomes just that, much more entertaining.
