Students around campus are entering the home stretch as the semester is ending. Some students might consider this crunch time, but for many there seems to be a nonchalant attitude towards the typical stress that revolves around the end of the school year.
College students have long been notorious procrastinators, and it seems that these stereotypes will never change. Whether it's waiting until the last minute to make decisions on what classes they will be taking in the coming semesters, or cramming in the final days before a test, students seem to pass or fail depending on how well they can perform under the crushing pressure of deadlines and test dates.
Jerome Lugo, an 18-year-old freshman, says, "I'm not really worried about finals yet." He has apparently adopted the, "cross that bridge when I come to it" attitude that many students have become accustomed to.
Although Lugo says that he plans to continue his studies at HCC during the fall semester, he still has no idea which classes he will be enrolling in.
This is often the case for students at HCC. Waiting until the last minute to sign up for classes can be severely detrimental to one's studies. Due to an increase of students in the past few years, it has become very hard to create a workable schedule if you are signing up just before the deadline.
When 20-year-old sophomore, Samir Rivera, was asked what classes he planed to take in the fall he replied very similarly to Lugo.
"I haven't really thought about what classes I'm taking in the fall" Says Rivera.
Taking it one step at a time is Rivera's mantra for how he studies. Rivera says that when it comes time to begin studying for final exams he will buckle down and do what he has to, but, as for now, there is no need to prematurely prepare for something that isn't happening in the near future.
These sentiments are often the norm for students around campus. Planning ahead for classes and studying for a test beyond a couple days before the deadline appears to be unfathomable for most at HCC.
Brandon Campus book store cashier, 19-year-old Ryan Pace, seems to be an exception to the rule. He says that he has planned out his entire class schedule for his time at HCC. He also says that for one of his classes he has prepared a final speech weeks in advance.
Beyond all of his planning and preparation when he was asked why he hasn't signed up for summer classes yet he admittedly said, "I've been procrastinating."
As the line at the student services desk grows longer and the waiting room in the Financial Aid office becomes flooded with people, students still feel they can wait until the last minute to accomplish the massive workload of the typical college student.
At times, the threat of impending doom can motivate an individual, but for some these are times of extreme stress and aggravation. Whatever the case may be, the entire semester boils down to these arduous final weeks.
