Students gather in the Ybor campus courtyard for a memorial for student Carl Walters

Students gathered in the Ybor City courtyard to pay tribute to Carl G. Walters whose life ended abruptly in what police are calling a family dispute.

In a classic case of Cain versus Abel, police believe that he was stabbed to death by his brother Derrick C. Cullins, who had been recently released from prison. According to the Hillsborough County arrest report, Cullins is currently being held without bail and has been charged with second-degree murder.

Another HCC student, Ryan Darkins Davis is still missing.

During the memorial service the students gathered and spoke about what a unique and great student Walters was. There was not a dry eye at the tribute and there was a solemn feeling.

"He was very helpful and always willing to volunteer. I really enjoyed the way he interacted with the students," said Edna Jones, SGA Adviser.

"Carl was the type of student who never stopped giving. He will be deeply missed. I am dumfounded for words. He was not just a student he was my friend," said a teary-eyed Eboyne Jackson, a student at the Ybor campus.

A press release from the college released on April 22 said that since Walters loved chess, Ybor campus' chess club is being renamed the Carl Walter's Chess Club of Ybor City, at HCC.

"Mr. Walters was an active and vibrant member of the campus family. Beloved by his peers, faculty, and staff who had the opportunity to know him, he will be sorely missed. We continue to wish for the safe return of Mr. Ryan Darkins Davis as he, too, has touched many lives at the Ybor City Campus," said Ashley Carl, HCC spokeswoman.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Walters' body was discovered in a wooded area in Plant City. A passer by noticed the unidentified body in a wooded area and notified authorities on Tuesday.

According to news reports, Walters' mother reported him missing that Friday. It was then that the Sherriff's Office determined the body that was discovered was Walters. Authorities detained Cullins for questioning.

During the investigation, Cullins denied being near Plant City. However, surveillance cameras showed Cullins at a business making a purchase located four miles from where the body was found

During the investigation authorities were told that the last person that he was last seen with was 20-year-old Ryan Davis. Davis' mother reported him missing on Wednesday, April 8. To date, he has not been located and authorities are asking anyone who knows of his whereabouts to contact them with any information.

No other information has been disclosed in regards to the missing student Ryan Davis who was also a former SGA Senator. If you have any information please call (813)247-8000.
