On Feb. 28, 2016, millions of Americans enjoyed the premier television event regarding cinema, the Academy Awards.

This event honors nominees in the previous year in film with several different categories. These Categories include Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and the highly touted Best Picture.

Hundreds of celebrity’s poured into the theater, to honor their fellow Hollywood icons on their successes and achievements in the world of film.

The day began with the celebrities arriving on the famed red carpet, where they were greeted by numerous fans as well as paparazzi. The world watched as these famous icons casually and confidently explained ìhich fashion designer created their outfit, they were wearing that evening.

After the fabulous red carpet fashion show, audience members made their way to the main stage and found their seats, anxiously waiting for the award ceremony to begin.

This year, the Oscars were hosted by comedian Chris Rock, who got off to a strong yet raucous start, addressing recent allegations that the Academy Awards were racist, due to the lack of black nominees.

Rock made light conversation of the news, explaining that out of 88 Academy Awards, at least 70 of them had been all white.

The award show featured skits referencing celebrities as well as notable actors and actresses presenting the awards. Throughout the award ceremony, 11 Academy Awards were handed out, with notable winners including Spotlight, for Best Picture, Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor in his role in The Revenant, and Brie Larson for Best Actress in her role in The Room.

This was DiCaprio’s first Oscar, however, for many years, popular opinion has been he should have won for many of his previous roles.

Something interesting to note is that this year’s Academy Awards attracted only 34 million viewers, an 8 percent decline from last year.

This is believed to be a decline in black viewership due to the aforementioned allegations that the Oscars are racist.

All in all this year’s Oscars provided much of what is expected to come out of the Academy Awards. Popular actors and actresses parading about predicting who they think will win. When the actual winners are announced, the award speeches are nothing more than a gratuitous heralding to those who helped them achieve their dream of becoming an Oscar winner.
