Campos and Small prepare for their first club meeting, held on March 6th

The new Fitness Club at HCC provides students with a free opportunity to maintain their health. Created by SGA senators John Campos and Sherron Small, the club meets for one hour every Friday beginning on March 6, 2015.

“For us, we want this to be the best hour of their week, because we literally want to have a party for an hour because it’s with music the entire time,” said Campos “We want it to be as fun as possible and we want to bring that same energy every Friday.”

Campos is studying to become a certified Zumba instructor and Small is a certified trainer who worked at a gym for over a year. They are both huge advocates of a healthier lifestyle and hope to make it as enticing as possible to college students. Although their meetings are now every Friday, it is subject to change based on student availability as well as the meeting time which is currently set from 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. The first half of the hour kicks off with cardio provided by Campos through Zumba dancing. The last half hour will be body sculpting by Small.

“He’ll be doing his own personal twist on it,” Campos added, “There will probably be select days that we’ll bring in special guests or we’ll bring in mentors of our own just to talk about overall wellness and fitness. As far as guiding students overall to better food choices, that’s definitely on our radar.”

Although educating students in nutrition is a goal for the president, Small, and vice president of the club, Campos, they are not certified to do so. Between the visitors and informational emails they plan on sending their members, they hope to inspire students to maintain healthier ways outside of the club on a regular basis.

“We’ll be touching very lightly on nutrition, being that we do have knowledge on it but without an actual certification next to our name we can’t really give, like, nutrition plans or anything like that,” said Campos.

The free opportunity that they are providing for students is not one you can find at a local gym. Personal trainers are either hired or included in your gym membership. Zumba classes are also rarely free and similarly, are usually included in a gym membership.

Small noted that with his experience at the gym, he notices people who regularly misuse the machines. At the Fitness Club, they will not be using any machinery. “The difference is this is more personal. You have people actually in your face motivating you,” Small added.

Small and Campos are very optimistic about the club. Small stated that they would work on plans for the club until 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. They hope to expand the club to the community to solve the issue of obesity in America.

“Me and John personally, we made a commitment to not only bring this to HCC but to bring it to a nonprofit or some sort of organization. We want to be able to do this for kids that deal with childhood obesity,” said Small.
