When assignments pile up and deadlines approach, many students feel isolated and overwhelmed during the semester. Luckily, a haven for students is nestled right here on the Ybor City campus, and its name is the Academic Success Center. For those who haven’t yet heard, the ASC is a tutoring center located on the first floor of the library building. It offers assistance in all core subjects, including Writing, Math, Science, Spanish, and Business. The student-centered services can vary from drop-in tutoring, weekly tutorassisted study groups, one-on-one writing assistance, EAP and ESOL chat groups, Canvas assistance, and most importantly, a lovely staff of tutors all eager to help students succeed. Regular usage of tutoring can help students improve half to almost a full letter grade! Now, there are some of misconceptions about this center — tutors can’t check homework, replace class lecture, or proofread papers… However, the ASC can do so much more than that! Sessions transpire via conversation; tutors sit down and transfer needed knowledge and skills onto students so that they may tackle future assignments with ease. This is what makes the Academic Success Center such a special place for students; it is dedicated to expanding student autonomy. As the HCC mission states, “Academic Success Centers provide learning environments, services, and resources designed to empower students to become successful, independent learners.” With International Tutor Week just around the corner (October 6-12), the ASC is hosting workshops and raffles. There is no better time than now for students to stop by and give a visit to the Ybor City Academic Success Center!
