12.21.12

December 21, 2012, also called the “2012 Phenomenon,” is projected to be the day the world ends. This is similiar to the Y2K predictions in the year 2000, when the world was going to come to an end because computers would lose all ability to function.

The theory that the world will end on December 21st was spurred by the discovery that the end of the Mayan calendar, which counted every day for a period of 5,125 years, ends of December 21, 2012. Some speculate that the Mayans simply couldn’t count any further, or that maybe the Mayans died out before the calendar could be completed.

According to the NASA website: “The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012 and linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012–hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.” NASA also says that there are no planetary alignments for the next few decades; the only astrological event planned for 2012 is the winter solstice.

Will the world end next month? Nobody can say for sure, but the odds are definitely against planetary alignment.
