The Florida heat, and good company, created the perfect day for a fruit-flavored marathon. The fourth annual Flavor Run 5k took place in Tampa at the Florida State Fairgrounds. People from all-around the Tampa Bay area attended the event – with the option to “run, walk, skip, crawl, dance or stroll,” according to the official Flavor Run website. The Flavor Run organization recognizes and supports local charities, including Girls on the Run of Tampa Bay.

A family-friendly marathon, attendees had the option to form teams or run solo. Besides the fact that fruit-flavored coloring served as the main attraction, some runners had personal reasons for their presence at the race. Marathon runner Karen Gill said that she participated in the run for her husband Michael. “I want to have a good time,” Gill said. “It means fun, so we can do it together.”

Other participants, like military veteran David Caras, ran for the purpose of motivation. Before an injury that gave him a prosthetic leg, Caras actively ran. “I used to race,” Caras said. “Having a goal and getting to that completion is the motivation.”

The Flavor Run organization sponsors races in different locations across America. The highlight of the races always includes the variety of fruit-flavored powders that add a dash of color that inspires some attendees to stay active.

When participating in the Flavor Run, runners come to the event decked out in their all-white attire with the mindset to get splashed with color. Participants also took the advantage of different kiosks advertising products and handing out accessories before the start of the marathon.

The people attending the Flavor Run follow a certain race map that includes the starting line and four different flavor stations before crossing the finish line. The event lasted from 9 a.m. to around 1 p.m., giving participants enough time to take the course at their own pace.

For most marathons, the runners prepare by hydrating themselves. For the Flavor Run, the participants prepare themselves with sweet tasting powder.
