Do you really need that?

Have you ever been late to a meeting, date, school, or anything else because everything in your closet is hideous and you hate it? I have had this problematic experience on several occasions. My closet is jam packed, and so is my dresser. For the most part, none of the clothes in my room haven’t seen sunlight since I carried them from my car to what is now their final resting place.

I’ve always been a shopping enthusiast, and I can’t seem to say no to a trip to the mall, but do I really need all of these articles of clothing? Absolutely not! Most of the clothes in my closet are for occasions that never really seem to come up. I don’t like clubbing, but I have at least twenty different outfits available if I ever feel the urge to get my drink and dance on. I feel like I’m not skinny enough to wear cutoffs, but if I buy them, then I’ll exercise to slim down, not. And I love my long sleeved shirts, but I’d rather not melt in this Florida heat.

“How did this happen to me?” I ask myself this question because I know I do not belong on the newest season of “Hoarders,” Yet, I won’t dispose of or sell my clothes because I might wear it one day in the not too distant future even though I know I need the storage space, and some extra cash wouldn’t hurt. I am well aware of the fact that I hate it when people have the same clothes as me. When I see someone wear something that I have, that unfortunate piece of clothing is automatically quarantined. These are problems of mine I’ve been trying to overcome for years, so I’ve turned to preventative measures instead.

Since I quit my job, I’ve been trying to cut back on spending. Whenever I do go out shopping, see something I love on the rack, and try it on and fall in love with it, I use these simple questions to determine whether I need to purchase:

1. Will it be in style next year? If you answered “no” then say good-bye.
2. Does your sister or best friend have the same thing, or something similar? If you answered “yes” then just go ahead and borrow from their closet.
3. Is the price worth it? If the total price divided by the anticipated total number of times worn is more than what you make working for one hour then bid farewell to that expensive piece of trash.
4. Does it have a logo plastered across your boobs or bum? Why would you even consider this…
5. Can you mix it in to your already existing wardrobe? Make sure you have at least three ways to wear it.
6. Is it for a one-time wear? Go ahead and rent a really fancy dress for $50 instead of buying a second-tier frock.

Next time you go clothing shopping please remember these questions because after all, do you really need that pair of leopard print pants?
