On Sunday, April 6, at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, the UConn Huskies faced off against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Huskies triumphed over the Gamecocks with a score of 82-59, securing a well-deserved National Championship victory that was heartwarming for many seniors and players on the team. Both teams left the court with humility.
After the game, Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley delivered speeches. Auriemma congratulated South Carolina for reaching the Final Four and the National Championship. Staley acknowledged UConn’s performance, stating, “Much respect to UConn. They did a masterful job in executing on both sides of the basketball,” during her last postgame interview.
The Huskies and the Gamecocks showcased an incredible game, but after the first quarter, the Gamecocks struggled to keep pace. By halftime, the Huskies were leading by 10 points. After the break, they extended their lead to 20 points, ultimately winning the game by 23 points.
Star players included Auzzi Fudd, who scored 24 points with 1 assist; Sarah Strong, who also scored 24 points but added 5 assists; and Paige Bueckers, who contributed 17 points and 3 assists. Freshman Strong was named the overall best player of the game, leading her team to the National Championship in her first year at UConn. Fudd celebrated her first National Championship win this year after recovering from a serious injury and will continue at UConn for one more season. Bueckers had an outstanding performance and earned a well-deserved championship after previous losses and injuries; she was the top pick in the 2025 WNBA draft, selected by the Dallas Wings.
Despite losing this year’s National Championship, South Carolina had an impressive season. Several of their star seniors were also picked in the WNBA draft this year. Te-Hina Paopao was chosen by the Atlanta Dream, Bree Hall was selected by the Indiana Fever, and Sania Feagin was picked by the Los Angeles Sparks.
Both teams and their players had remarkable seasons, achieving the great accomplishment of reaching the 2025 Women’s National Championship. Congratulations to the Huskies on their victory!
