When you are down on your game struggling to find a job, the Career Resource Center is like the Holy Grail. After searching for a job for months, and with the bills for books and classes piling up, giving up and taking out loans starts to look like the only option–until you walk by the Career Resource Center. Students are greeted by friendly students that worked there. They show you all the resources that students at HCC have, such as, the assessment test that helps when it comes to choosing a career path to pursue. They also assist you with building up your résumé and practice interviewing.

  Other resources they provide are online resources for job hunting, such as, College Central Network (CCN) where you can search for jobs posted exclusively to Hillsborough Community College, You can also access announcements, upcoming events, career advice documents, career advice videos, podcasts and career articles from authors. You can also build an online portfolio in the Career Portfolio to support your résumé and demonstrate your best work to employers. They also provide VAULT, an online career library that is available 24/7 for free.

  In VAULT, you can access and download information about jobs specific to your career path. When it comes to taking out a loan, there is also another option: become a federal work study student.

  If awarded by financial aid, you can work your way through college. It is convenient and works around your school schedule. Work study also allows you to gain professional experience that enhances your work ethics and general skills such as communication skills, and interpersonal skills. This opportunity to work enables studetns to network with other students, professors and employers.

  Ms. Keaton, the Ybor Campus career center manager, is very supportive and resourceful. She hosts events like business etiquette and job fairs to assist students in pursuing careers. Being such a compassionate and helping person, she, makes the environment very welcoming. She has very effective management skills and provides a lot for our students. When I was in desperate need of a job, she assisted me with getting federal work study.
