Phi Theta Kappa Brandon – making HCC proud

Phi Theta Kappa recently attended their annual regional convention in Fort Lauderdale, FL and made HCC proud. As one college, PTK brought home 13 of 18 award categories, 10 of those awards coming from the Brandon chapter, including awards for arts, music, Honors in Action essay, Honors in action speech, distinguished chapter member, distinguished chapter officer, distinguished chapter officer team, continued excellence for advisors (Michael Odu), distinguished service (Dr. Carlos Soto), and distinguished regional chapter.

“Each chapter does different things, one of the projects this year are honors in action, we were working as a competition. We believe that working together makes us better. Collaboration and competition makes us better, it like fighting with your brother or sister,” said Michael Odu, adviser of the Brandon chapter of PTK. “We are in a great position to win more at the International Convention in San Jose next month where 3 of our 5 chapters (SouthShore, Ybor City, and Brandon) will also receive 5-Star Honors.”

PTK Brandon has about 100 members, with about 30 active members that are hard at work on a variety of projects, all on top of their school work. They are currently working on a campus and road clean up, a scholarly summit and organizing their Spring induction.

Members of PTK chapters at any campus have a higher rate of graduation than a disengaged student, and have many learning opportunities in the form of projects, community service, and teamwork. To join PTK, a student needs to have a 3.5 GPA and to have completed at least 12 credit hours.

PTK will be joing to San Jose on April 4-7 for their international convention. With pride, Odu noted,“I am sure that Brandon and Ybor will dominate in the awards in San Jose.”
